they are so phoney and annoying to watch, i wanted to turn away it was sickening. awful stuff, hire someone that won't appear to be a phoney to gamers and geeks.
You knew it would be bad as soon as the one lady talks about "beating up on her boss". It's one thing to have the top management get up on stage and do a presentation and talk about how great the new hardware, software, etc. is going to be. To have them get up there and do a live demo of new hardware? On a Wii!? That's just asking for trouble.
Hell, you don't see the execs at EA or any other major gaming company playing the games in their demonstrations. Nintendo should have figured that out. They have people in their booths that are "normal gamers" for a reason.
If Carmack isn't using OpenGL then OGL its pretty much dead in the commercial game rendering business. Shame too. Microsoft will never open DX. It's a cash cow for them.
As pointed out in the article, there is a Mac version of Rage that uses OpenGL, so for sure id isn't abandoning OpenGL. My bet is that the game uses DX9 equivalent fragment shaders (the OpenGL version of DX9 pixel and vertex shaders), just like the Doom 3 engine.
Im afraid this game is going to be another STALKER. When it comes out it will be drounded by other hot new releases with developers that are actually able to execute and launch with a specific dead line.
And Empire Total War looks sweet! Though Feb 2009? :(
Sorry, I use Firefox and it says I need to install QuickTime. It takes me to their site and I install it and it still doesn't playback. I already use Quicktime Alternative to play those files back in Media Player Classic. I guess I should try to use IE just to view the files. Any other FF users have this issue?
It might be an issue with QuickTime Alternative; I know I've used that in the past and had issues. I'm running Firefox 3.0.1 with standard QuickTime 7.4.5 and they all play fine for me. (Of course, this is the same PC where downloaded QuickTime movies will cause it to BSOD! Can't say I'm a fan of QT either.)
As for the movies, if you click on any of the HD links, you should be able to choose to watch in Flash, QT, or Windows Media. Not sure if that helps for the rest of the movies, though.
" Rage has been announced as a DX9 game with no plans for DX10 support. Here's to hoping the developers have a change of heart. [Ed: Interesting to note is that Rage for the PC will apparently not use OpenGL as is standard for id Software; however, the Mac version will use OpenGL. Perhaps DirectX has reached the point where Carmack no longer feels it's a handicap, or maybe he's just throwing in the towel as one of the few remaining holdouts.]"
Or Maybe idsoft wants to port the title to the xbox360 ?
I've had a few debates/conversations with people online lately about the state of DX10 games. With no DX10 hardware on consoles, and with a huge installed base of DX9 hardware... plus with the Vista requirement for DX10... basically, I don't think we're coming anywhere near to utilizing what DX10 really can do. Everything so far is a DX9 game with DX10 stuff added, because no one is willing to ditch support for all the XP and DX9 user base. It's almost as bad as the state of 64-bit applications. Almost. Still, the fact that id is releasing an OpenGL version on Mac makes the use of DirectX on the PC interesting.
Actually Jarred, what I meant was that I'm nearly positive that the xbox360 uses Direct3D 9, and there is a development kit for Directx that can be used for PC, or xbox360 titles(sorry, I do not recall the resource kit name). What I was trying to get at here was that IF IDSoft has any hopes of releasing said title for the xbox360, Directx9 *would* be the only way to go, and since this resource kit can be used for xbox360 AND PC titles . . .
But since they're doing a Mac version, they've already got OpenGL. There's some confusion on the subject of whether or not it's really using DX9, or if it's a DX9-class OpenGL solution. Not that important in the grand scheme of things, of course, as the final game and gameplay is what matters.
The PC/Windows version still uses OpenGL according to John Carmack. It's a D3D9-class renderer, not a D3D9 renderer.
"The PC version is still OpenGL, but it is possible that could change before release...I am going to at least consider OpenGL 3.0 as a target, if Nvidia, ATI, and Intel all have decent support."
'Course, this was way back in September of 2007...
